Breaking Bad is incredible...

Updated: Jan 22, 2020

With the release of El Camino near the beginning of September... it's time to take a look at some of the iconic moments that featured within the television phenomenon.

In terms of storyline, Breaking Bad is incredible. A perfect narrative cycle...

Breaking Bad features the protagonist, Walter White (played by Bryan Cranston), who has hit a mid-life crisis stage as he discovers he has terminal brain cancer. With an expensive treatment to pay for, and the low expectancy of survival, Walter needs to raise the funds in order to provide for his family. The only way to do this... is to produce and sell drugs. And in particular Methamphetamine. However, this doesn't exactly go to plan...

"I have spent my whole life scared, frightened of things that could happen, might happen, might not happen, 50-years I spent like that. Finding myself awake at three in the morning. But you know what? Ever since my diagnosis, I sleep just fine. What I came to realise is that fear, that’s the worst of it. That’s the real enemy. So, get up, get out in the real world and you kick that bastard as hard you can right in the teeth."

Now known as Heisenberg, Walter White partners up with an ex student, Jesse Pinkman in order to create their pure product. They rise through the ranks, whilst producing, distributing and selling, earning more cash than they know what to do with. However, every great television series must have conflict.

Through a constant process of lying, Walter loses his wife and kids, whilst Jesse loses the love of his life. A dark patch for the two protagonists sees Jesse go to rehab and Walter being kicked out of his own home as well as being forced to sign divorce papers. But, they carry on. The produce more meth and make more money and there is no stopping them.

But with a rise of power becomes greater responsibility. And they start to get involved with more powerful people such as the cartel. From here onwards... I can honestly not ruin the plot if you haven't seen it so I suggest you do. Battles of power and status measure the relationship between Walter and Jesse. Do they like each other? Do they hate each other? Are they more than just work colleagues? Who comes out on top? The only way you find out is by watching the entire five series. Only until then, will you be able to understand how this is easily one of the greatest television series ever made. And don't even get me started on series 3, episode 10 - The Fly... simple but genius.
